Sabina Shikhlinskaya is an artist and independent curator. Shiklinskaya explores multimedia practices, where she uses her cross-cultural background to create art works, including complex relationships between politics, historical memories and national identity. Dealing indirectly with social issues, she balances aesthetics and deep conceptual meanings. Shikhlinskaya studied monumental painting at the Mukhina Institute of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg (1981-83) and completed her professional education in the University of Arts and Culture in Baku in 1988. She is a Honored Artist of Azerbaijan Republic. Her art works were shown in large number of exhibitions and among them Biennials and exhibitions held in National Galleries and Museums . Shikhlinskaya art presented in state and private collections though all over the world. Since 1993 Sabina Shikhlinskaya has curated more than 70 exhibitions and projects in both Azerbaijani and international venues. In 2007, Sabina Shikhlinskaya was the curator of the Azerbaijan’s 1st pavilion at the 52nd Art Biennale in Venice. In 2009 Sabina Shikhlinskaya initiated and curated International Forum of Contemporary Art “Maiden Tower.To Be a Woman”, which took place in Baku, Azerbaijan. In 2010 she continued to work on gender issues and curated international video art exhibition "Openly" in Istanbul, Antrepo, Sanat Limani in the frames of ”Istanbul – Capital of Culture of Europe”. In the art and educational projects curated by Sabina Shikhlinskaya, the social issus are in high priority.
